HUAWEI ANNOUNCES FIRST EUROPEAN PARTNER FOR EUROPEAN OPENHARMONY AT FOSDEM’21

This latest partnership represents a first step towards European collaborations and contributions as part of Huawei’s European OpenHarmony project

February 08th, 2021 –Huawei, the world leading technology company, has recently announced its collaboration with SECO – a global leader in the high-tech market – who will be onboarded as one of the first European partner for Huawei’s European OpenHarmony open source technology.

Speaking at FOSDEM’21, one of the major European open source events addressed to the world of open source communities and developers, has been a great opportunity for Huawei to share the stage together with SECO announcing the partnership for the European OpenHarmony operating system project and highlighting the importance of this collaboration to initiate, promote and develop an open ecosystem that would co-develop the operating system powering future devices.

OpenHarmony is a very ambitious project that makes open source, open governance and community sharing its real innovative nature, it is a new way of conceiving consumer devices and their use, starting from a great assumption: transcending physical perimeters and concepts historically related to what an operating system can do. It’s a new IoT frontier that is looking at how to improve users daily life and make it easy, simple and intuitive to provide a seamless user experience. A new era where devices intelligently communicate in an open, collaborative and transparent way to achieve what you need to achieve on every device that accompany.

FOSDEM has been the occasion to provide a 360° degrees tour of OpenHarmony from the more technical and legal aspects to business and user perspective, as well as revealing the roadmap of the project for 2021 in terms of features, business development and mission.

Davide Ricci, Director of Huawei’s Open Source Technology Centre, commented: “Open source, open governance and community sharing is at the heart of the OpenHarmony project. It is precisely from this need for openness, as well as the sharing of expertise and skills, that our collaboration with SECO was founded. We look forward to working closely with them, and other European partners in due course, in order to bring OpenHarmony to more overseas markets.”

Davide Catani, CTO at SECO, added: “The OpenHarmony project is very ambitious thanks to its deeply innovative nature; in fact, defining it as simply an operating system would be extremely reductive. OpenHarmony focuses on the end customer by delivering an incredible user experience, whilst also being oriented to content creators and OEMs, in order to bring these three stakeholders certainty, choice and convenience. SECO has been designing and manufacturing innovative products and services for OEMs for more than forty years, and we strongly believe that OpenHarmony will be a game changer in supporting our European customers.”

Huawei’s Open Source Technology Centre (OSTC) is a technology hub located in Europe, which is focused on bringing the OpenHarmony project to Europe and beyond. The hub is continuing to expand its partnerships with communities, innovation hubs and companies – start-ups and public companies alike – in order to onboard more local and global partners to the project.
